Partners in Active Living for Seniors - PALS
A health and fitness program designed to help older adults have fun, be more active and become more empowered to sustain independent lives.
The Partners in Active Living for Seniors program is designed to help older adults have fun while improving their physical fitness. It offers a safe and enjoyable experience for people of all fitness levels, including those who may walk with the assistance of a cane or walker.
VINE's staff member, Angie Mott -- a registered nurse with 20 years of experience working with seniors -- is coordinating the program. She meets with each interested participant, conducts a simple assessment, informs the participant's physician about the exercise program, and helps gauge whether they should join. All classes are led by trained exercise instructors and coordinated by a graduate student pursuing a career in fitness for older adults at Minnesota State University, Mankato. VINE's staff will be happy to arrange transportation and even match people with an exercise PAL -- a new friend who enjoys being physically active.
The next session of the PALS Program classes will begin May 12, 2008. Participants will meet three times each week for 10 weeks. The hour-long group exercise classes will be held at the Summit Center, Orness Plaza and the Lake Crystal Recreational Center. We are now registering senior participants and recruiting PALS volunteers of all ages. To register, contact Angie at VINE Faith in Action, 507.387.1666 or e-mail angiemott@vinevolunteers.com
The PALS program is jointly sponsored by VINE Faith in Action, the MN River Area Agency on Aging, MAGEC South, Minnesota State University, Mankato, Blue Earth Community Health, the City of Mankato and the Lake Crystal Area Recreation Center. Funding is provided by the MN Department of Human Services. According to Loren Colman, Assistant Commissioner of Continued Care at the Minnesota Department of Human Services, the funding "is intended to help aging Minnesotans live independently in their homes and to increase the capacity of family, friends and neighbors and communities to provide support to older individuals."
